This geologic feature is the center of the creation story by which Coyote slew a monster, and called into existence The People--Nimiipuu. Site of an ancient Nez Perce fishing village, this Idaho Transportation Department rest area is a nice place to stop and imagine life when dugout canoes, not automobiles, transported families along the Clearwater River. RM2M5HJDN–Northwest Passage Scenic Byway - Looking Glass Camp, Kooskia. An interpretive sign tells of when US army troops attacked the village of Chief Looking Glass, a peaceful chief who had sought to avoid conflict with the outbreak of the 1877 Nez Perce War. The unprovoked attack drew him and his village into the war, and set the stage for the Nez Perce flight culminating with the Battle of the Bear Paw near Chinook, Montana, where Looking Glass was killed. RM2M5HK82–Northwest Passage Scenic Byway - Kooskia Crossing/Welcome Center, Kooskia. Interpretive signs educate the visitor about Kooskia Crossing. This native river crossing was also used as a ford by miners and loggers. Today this gateway marks the split between US Highway 12 and Idaho Highway 13, leading byway travelers to choose their subsequent route: on to Lolo Pass, or south to Grangeville and the Camas Prairie country? RM2M5HNEJ–Northwest Passage Scenic Byway - Long Camp/Riverfront Park, Kamiah. Leaves change colors at the edge of Long Camp/Riverfront Park. Near the present community of Kamiah, the Lewis and Clark Expedition spent several weeks living among the Nez Perce while awaiting favorable travel conditions over the snowy Bitterroot Range in 1806. Their so-called 'Long Camp' reinforced the goodwill that existed between the explorers and the Nimiipuu. Location: Idaho (46.218° N 116.007° W)

RM2M5HNXH–Northwest Passage Scenic Byway - Canoe Camp, Orofino. A dugout canoe rests behind an eduational sign at Canoe Camp. While occupied by ancestors of the Nimiipuu for over 4,000 years, this Nez Perce National Historical Park component site is named for the brief stay of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in September-October 1805. Here the explorers, with native assistance, felled Ponderosa pines and constructed dugout canoes for their continued journey to the Pacific. Location: Idaho (46.500° N 116.333° W)

American author and historian Bernard DeVoto, a scholar of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, edited a compilation from the explorers' journals. He found a personal sanctuary in the memorial cedar grove that bears his name--as can you today as you stop along the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway. Location: Idaho (46.509° N 114.790° W)
