The Paris Peace Accords of January 1973 officially marked the end of the U.S. military operations in Vietnam. At Christmas of 1972, the Air Force had still engaged in around 2,000 air raids bombing Hanoi and Haiphong in North Vietnam and caused massive damage. In early 1973 in the 'Operation Homecoming', 562 U.S.-POWs (Prisoners of War) were released from North Vietnam into the United States. This was the largest enemy gun captured in South Vietnam, with the North Vietnamese soldiers attempting to reposition it to face down the Ashau Valley. However, US Marines intervened during Operation Dewey Canyon, preventing the completion of the repositioning and forcing the enemy to spike the gun before retreating.
