RM2GKK9JJ–A U.S. Army Nike Ajax MIM-3 (Mobile Interceptor Missile, design 3) – the world's first operational guided surface-to-air missile – on display at Fort Hancock, Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook, N.J., May 13, 2021. The Fort Hancock Nike missile battery, NY-56, was part of the New York Defense Area. It was activated in 1955 and continued operations through 1974. The site included a missile launch area and an integrated fire control area that controlled and guided the missiles.
