Republic was issued with the new Marconi wireless telegraph system and became the first ever ship to issue a CQD (Come Quickly, Danger) distress signal, when Jack Binns transmitted the message for fourteen hours straight amidst the wreck of the wireless office. The Republic sank on 24th January, after passengers had been painstakingly transferred to the Florida, and then the White Star liner RMS Baltic. Date: 1909

The ship was wrecked on May 14th 1866, a week after leaving Melbourne for London. 68 out of the 83 crew and passengers perished, 'the rest got ashore in boats,and managed to live in that dreary place, enduring the severest hardships, about a year and a half, till they were relieved by the brig Amherst, of Invercargill, New Zealand, on Nov 21, 1867.' RM2M3P65R–The burning of the emigrant ship Volturno in mid-Atlantic. How the boats from the rescue fleet approached the burning British steamer at dawn. The vessel was sailing from Rotterdam to New York. Eleven ships came to the rescue, saving 520 passengers and crew. About 130 people, mostly women and children, were lost.
