Communications carriers were worn during launch and the mission, and were affectionately known as the "Snoopy Cap" from its resemblance to a famous cartoon character of the era. It was constructed of an elastic center portion with Teflon fabric sides containing the communications equipment and mouthpiece. It fastened beneath the chin and was worn during the launch sequence, while in the lunar module, and on the lunar surface.

It carried astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen on an Earth-orbital mission scheduled to last for 54 hours. Armstrong recived the award that includes a moon rock to recognize the sacrifices and dedication of the astronauts and others who were part of the Mercury, Gemini and .Apollo programs. A former naval aviator and NASA test pilot and Apollo 11 commander, Armstrong was the first human to ever land a spacecraft on the moon and the first to step on the lunar surface. The HL-10 was one of five lifting body designs flown at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, California, from July 1966 to November 1975 to study and validate the concept of safely maneuvering and landing a low lift-over-drag vehicle designed for reentry from space.
