A line of British 'ships of the line', a type of naval warship in 1854. Constructed during the Age of Sail they were designed for the naval tactic known as the line of battle, in which two columns of opposing warships maneuver to volley fire with the cannons along their broadsides. In conflicts where opposing ships were both able to fire from their broadsides, the opponent with more cannons firing and firepower had an advantage. Destruction of the Turkish Fleet at Navarino - October 20, 1827. This remarkable battle freed Greece from Turkish rule. Yet the Greeks took no part in it; and it was brought about by an accident. Turkey was not at war with either Russia, England, or France; yet the war vessels of the latter three nations united in fighting a Turkish fleet. The Turks had an overwhelming force in numbers and cannons; but their entire fleet was wiped out, as were the Spaniards at Manila, by the superiority of the “ men behind the guns” on the other side. —caption accompanying early 1900s illustration Stock Photohttps://www.alamy.com/licenses-and-pricing/?v=1https://www.alamy.com/destruction-of-the-turkish-fleet-at-navarino-october-20-1827-this-remarkable-battle-freed-greece-from-turkish-rule-yet-the-greeks-took-no-part-in-it-and-it-was-brought-about-by-an-accident-turkey-was-not-at-war-with-either-russia-england-or-france-yet-the-war-vessels-of-the-latter-three-nations-united-in-fighting-a-turkish-fleet-the-turks-had-an-overwhelming-force-in-numbers-and-cannons-but-their-entire-fleet-was-wiped-out-as-were-the-spaniards-at-manila-by-the-superiority-of-the-men-behind-the-guns-on-the-other-side-caption-accompanying-early-1900s-illustration-image365652163.html

Chen Huacheng (Chinese:陈化成)(1776-1842), was a native of Tongan, Fujian. He became naval forces commander of Fujian in 1830 (10th year of the Daoguang reign) and provincial military commander of Jiangnan in 1840. He cast bronze cannons, made gun powder, built batteries, and prepared for the defense of Wusong. In 1842 when the British fleet came to attack, he opposed Jiangnan and Jiangxi governor-general Niu Jian's fear of the enemy and seeking of peace, waving the Qing banner and shelling British ships.
