HMS 'Windsor Castle' had first been launched in 1849, but was lengthened and had engines fitted in 1852, thus becoming the longest three-deck warship in the world. Later that year, she was re-named HMS 'Duke of Wellington' in memory of the famous general. She served as the Baltic flagship during the Crimean war, then as flagship of the Commander in Chief Portsmouth. She was sold and broken up in 1904.

RM2M3JTD8–Hydro-electric machine invented by William George Armstrong (1810-1900), later Baron Armstrong of Bamburgh and Cragside, in the 1840's. Originally training as a solicitor, Armstrong was fascinated by mechanics and demonstrated this particular machine at the Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle-upon-Tyne to an audience which included famous engineers such as Faraday and Whitworth. The invention utilised high pressure steam issuing through nozzles in the boiler. 1845

George Grossmith (1847-1912) was an English comedian, writer, composer, actor, and singer. He was famous for performing his own comic piano sketches and songs, including this one, which he wrote in 1886, and which is still known today. A couple are depicted dancing the polka -- the man looks very much like Grossmith himself.
RM2M3K5TF–On the morning after the Guildhall banquet it was the custom each year to distribute the remains of the feast to deserving poor people selected by the committee. The food given away included something of everything on the menu, from the famous turtle soup and baron of beef to mousse de volaille au truffes and meringue a la vanille. Members of the committee, most of them wearing white aprons over their frock-coats act as distributors. The recipients are all residents in the City itself. 1908
RM2M3JWFM–Louis Wain taken from an advertisement for Phosferine, a tonic medicine, featuring Louis Wain, the famous cat artist. Wain testifies that the tonic, '...is a good pick-me-up, improves one's appetite and possesses very striking invigorating properties'. Wain was able to turn his hand to drawing a wide variety of animals prior to the fame he achieved with his feline creations. Sadly his growing obsession with cats turned to insanity and he died penniless in a mental asylum in 1939.
