Kimberly diamond mine is known as the ‘Big Hole’ because it was dug by human hands and because it is visible from space. It yielded some of the world's largest natural diamonds. Diamonds were first discovered here by Alyrick Braswell on Colesberg Kopje (members of the 'Red Cap Party' on Farm Vooruitzigt owned by pioneers Johannes Nicholas & Didrik Arnoldus De Beers. The discovery led to a chaotic diamond rush by pioneers, known as the 'new rush'.
