RM2HHFJJM–Trooper of the Plains 1908, cast before 1939 Frederic Remington American 'Trooper of the Plains' depicts a cavalry soldier on horseback, brandishing a revolver. The galloping horse is supported by only a clump of sage brush. Remington enjoyed experimenting with daring, gravity-defying poses that indicated his technical mastery of the sculptural process. The artist copyrighted 'Trooper of the Plains' in 1909, the year of his death. The Metropolitan’s bronze is almost certainly a posthumous, unauthorized cast done by Roman Bronze Works.. Hyde (1834–1899), founder of the Equitable Life Assurance Society in 1859. In 1901, on the second anniversary of Hyde's death, the bronze was unveiled in the Equitable building at 120 Broadway in New York. This vigorous and realistic depicts Hyde in modern-day attire, and its success inspired the Equitable to authorize casting of at least eighty-one statuettes between 1901 and 1903.
