RMEA844B–A framed 19th-century photographic portrait of Belgian missionary priest Joseph De Veuster, best known to the world as Father Damien, hangs in St. Joseph's Church that he built while serving the Hawaiian leper colony elsewhere on the island of Molokai, Hawaii, USA. More than 700 patients with leprosy (Hansen's disease) had been isolated there by the time Damien arrived in 1873. He later suffered the same infectious disease and died in the colony in 1889. Father Damien was canonized a saint in the Catholic Church In 2009. His St. Joseph's Church has since been renamed St. Damien's Church.
