RFM8GC3K–Black featherstars (Colobometra perspinosa: 20 cms.) are found in the Indo-Pacific region. This one was draped elegantly over a soft leather coral (Sarcophyton sp.), rather in the manner of a display in a jeweller's shop window. Its ten arms were extended in order to catch passing micro-plankton, which would then be transferred to the central mouth. In the middle of the picture, one can see it's ten small root-like appendages, called cirri, which attach the animal to the coral and can be used for 'walking'. The animal can also swim, by means of gentle undulations of its arms. Egyptian Red Sea.
