In this era, one could park a car in front of the 17th century buildings and so the city square became a large car park. The car was modern, the car was king. In the early 1970s, an article by British journalist John Lambert started a movement to change this and so in March 1972, private parking was banned from March to September, although cars could still drive through the square. It was only in 1990 that the square became fully pedestrianised with all traffic banned.
