Built by King Henry VIII between 1531 and 1536 in red-brick, on the site of a leper hospital dedicated to Saint James the Less, the palace's architecture is primarily Tudor in style. In 1649 Charles I spent his final night there before his execution. Oliver Cromwell then took it over, and turned it into barracks during the English Commonwealth period.

The Queen's Golden Monastery was constructed on the orders of Queen Supayalat in 1885. It was barely completed when she was exiled to India with her husband Thibaw, the last king of Burma (r. 1878-1885), following the annexation of Upper Burma by the British Empire. Now destroyed, the monastery stood inside the Mandalay Palace grounds and was a magnificent wooden building lavishly decorated with ornate woodcarving and mirrored glass mosaics.

After a fire destroyed an earlier gallery in 1661, Louis XIV ordered this part of the Louvre to be rebuilt. Architectural work was entrusted to Louis Le Vau, while Charles Le Brun was assigned responsibility for decorations by Jean-Baptiste Colbert. Le Brun's main theme for the room revolved around the movement of the sun through time and space, with the figure of Apollo glorifying Louis as the sun king.
