The damage was caused by an earthquake that occurred in 1963. It killed over 1,070 people and about 80 percent of the city was destroyed. The ruins were incorporated into the 1981 Transportation Center Skopje, the main city bus and railway interchange. It now houses the Museum of the City of Skopje.
