RM2D85A51–An unknown WWI German or Prussian officer wearing an Iron Cross medal. It was known in Germany as the Eisernes Kreuz (EK). The recommissioned Iron Cross was awarded during the Franco-Prussian War (EK 1870) and World War I (EK 1914). Though a military decoration, some civilians and test pilots were also awarded it for involvement in military acts. Its symbolic design with white or silver outline was derived from the cross pattée worn by the ancient Teutonic Order, of knights. 1914 Iron Cross (2nd Class) was black with two thin white bands. Civilian ribbons had the band colours reversed
