It shows the numerous impact craters and fault valleys of a very ancient surface. Tethys itself is 1,090 km. (675 mi.) in diameter, and the great chasm seen at the top of this image extends 1,700 km. (1,050 mi.) halfway across the satellite. The largest impact crater visible here is 9km. (55mi.) in diameter. RM2WBN5EB–This color HiRISE view shows a pitted, blocky surface, but also more unusually, it has contorted, irregular features. Although there are impact craters in this area, some of the features (like in the lower center of the cutout) are too irregular to be relic impact craters or river channels. One possibility is that sedimentary layers have been warped from below to create these patterns. The freezing and thawing of subsurface ice is a mechanism that could have caused this. Acidalia Planitia is part of the northern plains of Mars, at a latitude of 44 degrees north.

RMD999XK–This image from NASA's Dawn mission reveals the creeping dawn over the north pole of the giant asteroid Vesta now that sunlight is shining over that area. The mosaic is composed of 5 images obtained by Dawn's framing camera on Aug.26, 2012, while Dawn was at an altitude of about 4,000 miles (6,000 kilometers). Dawn's north pole is centered in this image and still in the dark. The mosaic shows two large impact craters, one relatively fresh with no smaller impacts on its floor and a second larger and older one with many smaller impacts on its floor.

The black spots form because the craters exposed cleaner materials in the subsurface beneath the bright, dusty surface. Bright ripples that are oriented from the upper right to the lower left are perpendicular to the wind flow. RM2K5D5XJ–Hebrus Valles are a complex set of channels in the northern lowlands of Mars just to the west of the Elysium volcanic region. The channel segments to the north of this image display a variety of features, including streamlined forms and terracing that are suggestive of catastrophic flooding. However, this observation shows channels of uniform width suggesting more persistent flows eroding into and around two impact craters, each about two hundred meters in diameter.
