A spiral staircase around the hollow trunk provides access to two chapels - Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix ('Our Lady of Peace') and the Chambre de l'Ermite ('Hermit's room') built in 1696 and still used. In the 16th Century, William Shakespeare could be found with his friends under the tree, where the parish priest, bailiff, churchwardens and schoolmaster would gather. Banners would wave, poles crowned with garlands would be carried by old and young and a passage from the Scriptures would be read and a psalm sung. Also known as 'The Elme at the Dovehouse-Close end' until it was cut down, by order of the Corporation, on 11th November 1847.

RM2AJJ0EA–Plants: The Hundred-Horse Chestnut located on the eastern slope of Mount Etna in Sicily, just 8 km (5.0 mi) from the volcano's crater is the largest and oldest known chestnut tree in the world. Above-ground the Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa), the tree has since split into multiple large trunks and is believed to be 2,000 to 4,000 years old. The tree's name originated from a legend in which a queen of Aragon and her company of one hundred knights, during a trip to Mount Etna, were caught in a severe thunderstorm. The entire company is said to have taken shelter under the tree.
