The simple deckchair is an icon of the British seaside and and relaxing in one on a summer's day is a tradition dating back to Victorian times. In post-war Britain, before the advent of overseas holidays, it remained as popular as ever, with the press reporting that on one day in August 1957 over 66,000 deckchairs were hired out on Blackpool beach. While those numbers may not be seen again, the deckchair has an evergreen appeal, based on nostalgia and its simple, effective design.
