RM2BW7NYY–Original early 1900's comic saucy seaside cartoon postcard of a large man using a mixed bathing machine looking happy about it. Protecting women's modesty whilst bathing had become less important by the time this card was published in 1910, after bathing areas became unsegregated in 1901.

RM2HJRYXK–1960s, historical, West Pier, Brighton, West Sussex, England, UK. Designed by seaside architect, Eugenius Birch, West Pier opened in 1866, but over the years visitor numbers declined and the pier closed in 1975 due to safety concerns, as urgent repairs were needed on its structure. Due to the high costs involved these were not undertaken and since that time, a combination of storm damage and numerous fires means the victorian masterpiece of a seaside pier is sadly no more.

Historically in the historic county of Cardiganshire, in one form or another, Aberystwyth University has been a major educational location in Wales since the establishment of University College Wales in 1872. The arrival of the railway around 1870 gave rise to something of a Victorian tourist boom; the town was once even billed as the 'Biarritz of Wales'.

Though its origins are disputed, historians are generally agreed that what is known as “modern” golf began in the Middle Ages in Scotland. It was not until the mid to late nineteenth century that this sport became more popular in wider Britain, the British Empire and then the United States. Over the years the humble golf ball and golf club have changed vastly.

RM2F6YBNE–1950s, historical, at the coast, holidaymakers sitting in deckchairs on a stoney beach, England, UK. The simple deckchair is an icon of the British seaside and and relaxing in one on a summer's day is a tradition dating back to Victorian times. In post-war Britain, before the advent of overseas holidays, it remained as popular as ever, with the press reporting that on one day in August 1957 over 66,000 deckchairs were hired out on Blackpool beach. While those numbers may not be seen again, the deckchair has an evergreen appeal, based on nostalgia and its simple, effective design.

RM2G7G8CK–A late 19th century view of Largs, a town on the Firth of Clyde in North Ayrshire, Scotland. A popular seaside resort with a pier, the town markets itself on its historic links with the Vikings and an annual festival is held each year in early September. In 1263 it was the site of the Battle of Largs between the Norwegian and the Scottish armies.

RMT7B599–A late 19th Century view of two young boys rowing across the harbour to the 13th Century castle in Caernarfon, royal town and port in Gwynedd, Wales on the eastern shore of the Menai Strait, opposite the Isle of Anglesey. Caernarfon castle, constructed between 1283 and 1330 by order of King Edward I, stands at the mouth of the River Seiont which creates a natural harbour where it flows into the Menai Strait.

The mother is attractive. Father is bearded. The child holding a bucket and spade is wearing a curious mix of a girl's dress and boy's cap and, given the Victorian habit of dressing boys in girls clothing, is probably a boy. He doesn't look very happy and is apparently having his photo taken under duress.
RMT7B51W–A late 19th Century view of Barmouth, a town in the county of Gwynedd, north-western Wales, lying on the estuary of the River Mawddach and Cardigan Bay. The town grew around the shipbuilding industry, and more recently as a seaside resort. William Wordsworth, a visitor to Barmouth in the 19th century, described it thus: 'With a fine sea view in front, the mountains behind, the glorious estuary running eight miles inland, and Cadair Idris within compass of a day's walk, Barmouth can always hold its own against any rival.'

However, in the 1850s the traffic changed dramatically, and Aberdour Harbour became a popular destination for pleasure steamers from Leith. This in turn led to the building of a deeper water pier a little around the bay at Hawkcraig, and to the development of hotels and many other services in the village.

RMT7B51N–A late 19th Century view of Rothesay, principal town on the Isle of Bute in the Firth of Clyde, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It developed as a popular tourist destination for Glaswegians going 'doon the watter'. Rothesay was also the location of one of Scotland's hydropathic establishments during the 19th century boom years of the Hydropathy movement. It also had an electric tramway - the Rothesay and Ettrick Bay Light Railway - which stretched across the island to one of its largest beaches.
