A traditional and well-loved athletic event at a Scottish highland games, the 'caber toss' involves a competitor tossing a long, heavy pole so that it turns end over end. Usually made from a Larch tree, and up to 20 feet in length, the caber is stood upright and then lifted up and tossed, not thrown. Caber is the Gaelic word for pole. Devised by Scottish woodsmen, the caber toss was first recorded in 1574, at a military meet as toss 'ye barr', when clan warriors tested their physical strength in sporting contests.
