The Book of Kells (c. 800 CE) is an illuminated manuscript of the four gospels of the Christian New Testament. The work is the most famous of the medieval illuminated manuscripts for the intricacy, detail, and majesty of the illustrations. Scholars believe it was made to be a showpiece for the altar and not for daily use, because more attention was given to the artwork than the text. Matthew was one of the twelve apostles – the first to respond to the call to follow Jesus. He wrote the first Gospel, recording the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. The Hundred Guilder Print ca. 1649 Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) Dutch The Hundred Guilder Print can be counted among Rembrandt’s most beautiful and complex compositions. The artist wove together in a horizontal composition individual episodes of the Gospel of St. Matthew to illustrate its full chapter 19. It is an exquisite puzzle of darks against lights and lights against darks that draw the eye across the image. He positioned Christ as a luminous beacon between the lightly etched left side and the sumptuous darkness he created on the right. Illuminated Manuscript, Reichenau Gospels, Evangelist portrait of Matthew, This Gospel book is believed to come from the Abbey of St. Peters in Reichenau, on the basis of its script, its illumination, and the fact that it contains a dedication image, in which a book is being handed to St Peter. The decoration of the manuscript places it in the so-called Luithar school of Reichenau. Prayer book, Above- St. Bartholomew; Below- St. Matthew, This early sixteenth-century illuminated prayer book contains Latin prayers and passages from the Gospels. Although small in scale, it is notable for its abundance of illuminations, with nearly sixty extant small miniatures. Full-color portraits embellish the prayers to the Virgin and Suffrages, while the images within the Gospel narrative are rendered primarily in grisaille, a nearly entirely gray monochrome technique. The last folios include a trompe-l'oeil foliate margin and a Crucifixion that seems to be a later addition Stock Photohttps://www.alamy.com/image-license-details/?v=1https://www.alamy.com/prayer-book-above-st-bartholomew-below-st-matthew-this-early-sixteenth-century-illuminated-prayer-book-contains-latin-prayers-and-passages-from-the-gospels-although-small-in-scale-it-is-notable-for-its-abundance-of-illuminations-with-nearly-sixty-extant-small-miniatures-full-color-portraits-embellish-the-prayers-to-the-virgin-and-suffrages-while-the-images-within-the-gospel-narrative-are-rendered-primarily-in-grisaille-a-nearly-entirely-gray-monochrome-technique-the-last-folios-include-a-trompe-loeil-foliate-margin-and-a-crucifixion-that-seems-to-be-a-later-addition-image573478584.html
