Silver and gilt amphoriskos (scented oil flask). Culture: Apulian, possibly Tarentine. Dimensions: H. 6 1/16 in. (15.4 cm). Date: early 3rd century B.C.. Several elegant vases of this type have been found in Southern Italy, and it is likely that this one was imported from there. Except for the solid handles and small collar-like mouth, it was raised from a single sheet of silver. A pair of gilded swags (or perhaps necklaces) emphasizes the widest part; gilded acanthus leaves ornament the base. The monogram D:M (R.M. in English) appears on the base, referring to the Etruscan owner. . Gothic Revival' binding. English, early 19th century. Brown calfskin over wooden boards; blind-tooled with floral and geometric design. Doublures gilt-tooled with an elaborate cathedral design, tooled in circles with drawer-handle type tools. An example of the Victorian interest in reviving medieval aesthetics, the use of wooden boards here is a conscious reference to early bindings, while the cathedral design is contemporary fashion. Breastplate from Hussar's Cuirass, c. 1580. This style of breastplate, with its numerous articulating lames, was probably used by a Hungarian hussar, a type of light cavalryman. The steel plates were originally blued-now turned russet-and etched and gilded with strapwork bands. The rows of vertical holes once provided gilt-brass settings for stones or glasspaste jewels. The effect would have suggested the semi-oriental costume and armor of the Near East favored by Polish and Hungarian armies of the late Renaissance. Wine Warmer (Zun). 206 BC–9 AD. China. Gilt bronze This type of cylindrical vessel has been identified as a wine warmer (zun) through a similar inscribed example excavated in northern China. The vessel may have been used for a variety of foods or wines, but its short legs indicate that it was probably not designed to be placed over a fire. This metal shape was modeled after early boxes of lacquered wood that served as cosmetic containers (lian). Ewer, Paris, c 1755-1760. Vase, China, c. 1725-1740, hard paste porcelain, gilt bronze. A Paris craftsman transformed this Chinese vase into an ewer.
