It is from an American history book of 1895. It took place during the American Revolutionary War, and was a surprise attack organised by Washington, the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, against the garrison at Trenton, New Jersey who were German mercenaries (Hessians) hired by the British. After the crossing, Washington’s troops successfully attacked the Hessians in the Battle of Trenton on December 26 1776.
