RMPB4CMD–Calais in the department of Pas-de-Calais, France from the sea. Due to its position, Calais since the Middle Ages has been a major port and a very important centre for transport and trading with England. It was annexed by Edward III of England in 1347 and grew into a thriving centre for wool production. On 7 January 1558, king Henry II of France sent forces led by Francis, Duke of Guise, who laid siege to Calais. When the French attacked, they were able to surprise the English at the critical strongpoint of Fort Nieulay, a loss regarded by Queen Mary I of England as a dreadful misfortune.

RMMEW7WY–15th Century Medieval English ships of warwere powered by sail or oar, or both. Frequent communications withEurope meant exposure to a variety of improvements. Ships in the north were influenced by Viking vessels, while those in the south by classical or Roman vessels. However, there was technological change as traditional construction methods were changed from clinker to carvel construction, which would dominate the building of large ships. The period would also see a shift from the steering oar or side rudder to the stern rudder and the development from single to multi-masted ships.

A trireme (from Latin triremis, literally 'three-oarer') was a type of galley, a Hellenistic-era warship that was used by the ancient maritime civilisations of the Mediterranean, especially the Phoenicians, ancient Greeks, Persians and Romans. The trireme derives its name from its three rows of oars on each side, manned with one man per oar. The early trireme was a development of the penteconter, an ancient warship.
