Hulsdonck was born in Antwerp but spent his early years in the southern Dutch port of Middelburg, where the flower painter Ambrosius Bosschaert (1573-1621) was his model. In this late work Hulsdonck employs a standard Antwerp composition, familiar from pictures by Jan Breughel I and II and by Frans Snyders (from whom the rhythmic tendrils come). RMPPK09R–Oleanders. Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, Zundert 1853-1890 Auvers-sur-Oise). Dimensions: 23 3/4 x 29 in. (60.3 x 73.7 cm). Date: 1888. For Van Gogh, oleanders were joyous, life-affirming flowers that bloomed 'inexhaustibly' and were always 'putting out strong new shoots.' In this painting of August 1888 the flowers fill a majolica jug that the artist used for other still lifes made in Arles. They are symbolically juxtaposed with Émile Zola's La joie de vivre, a novel that Van Gogh had placed in contrast to an open Bible in a Nuenen still life of 1885. Maker: Aubert Henri Joseph Parent (French, Cambrai 1753-1835 Valenciennes). Date: 1784. Carved of a single piece of soft lime wood, this high relief with its daring undercutting is an excellent example of the virtuoso work for which the French sculptor Aubert Parent was justly known. Reminiscent of Dutch seventeenth-century flower paintings, Parent's still lifes then as now drew admiration for their realism, delicacy, and the remarkable
RMPAMB96–Roses. Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, Zundert 1853-1890 Auvers-sur-Oise). Dimensions: 36 5/8 x 29 1/8 in. (93 x 74 cm). Date: 1890. On the eve of his departure from the asylum in Saint-Rémy in May 1890, Van Gogh painted an exceptional group of four still lifes, to which both the Museum's Roses and Irises (58.187) belong. These bouquets and their counterparts--an upright composition of irises (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam) and a horizontal composition of roses (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.)--were conceived as a series or ensemble, on a par with the earlier Sunflower

The juxtaposition of the prominent bouquet and the off-center figure, gazing distractedly to the right, exemplifies Degas's aim of capturing individuals in seemingly casual, slice-of-life views. The sitter is probably the wife of the artist's schoolboy friend Paul Valpinçon; Degas immensely enjoyed outings to their country house, Ménil-Hubert, and the dahlias, asters, and gaillardias in the bouquet would suggest a late

Edwin and Ruth Edwards, the English patrons and dealers of Fantin's work, recommended that the artist always use simple vases and plain tabletops in his still lifes in order to show to advantage his great skill in rendering texture and color. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Given the social and political unrest in post-revolutionary Paris, Delacroix retreated to his country house, Champrosay, in September 1848. There he undertook a series of flower paintings, intended for the Salon of 1849, that he hoped would capture the variety and profusion of garden flowers. Because of the possibility of frost, he worked quickly and produced five canvases. Of these, only two satisfied him sufficiently to be included in

In May 1890, just before he checked himself out of the asylum at Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh painted four exuberant bouquets of spring flowers, the only still lifes of any ambition he had undertaken during his yearlong stay: two of irises, two of roses, in contrasting color schemes and formats. In the Museum's Irises he sought a 'harmonious and soft' effect by placing the 'violet' flowers against a 'pink background,' which have since faded owing to his use of

Still-life painters frequently included cut crystal or glassware in their elaborate fruit or flower compositions (53.111), in part as a demonstration of virtuoso technique-to paint a transparent object, visible only as reflected and refracted light, presents a special challenge and, if successful, brings particular delight to the viewer. This picture is closely related to Still Life: Flowers, 1885 (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York), which depicts the same vase--with its distinctive elephant-head handles--and wood table or dresser. Featuring an autumnal bouquet and Cézannesque arrangement of prickly pears, the present still life was likely painted the same year, in the wake of a visit with Cézanne that summer. At this time, Renoir sought t
RMPA94X7–Still Life with Pansies. Artist: Henri Fantin-Latour (French, Grenoble 1836-1904 Buré). Dimensions: 18 1/2 x 22 1/4 in. (47 x 56.5 cm). Date: 1874. According to a list of Fantin's paintings compiled by his wife, this still life is one of thirty-one compositions of flowers and fruit that the artist produced in 1874. The branch of apples suggests that the present picture was painted in the fall; the pansies are spring flowers that were probably cultivated in a hothouse. Fantin reprised elements seen here in at least two other paintings: Potted Pansies of 1883 (2013.636) and Pansies</i

This still life is not mentioned in Van Gogh's letters and has puzzled scholars as to its place in his artistic production. The subject enjoys a certain rapport with the mixed bouquets of summer flowers he made in Paris; the quasi-abstract floral wallpaper design in the Berceuse of Arles (1996.435), and the white porcelain vase in the Irises of Saint-Rémy (58.187). One of Gauguin's most treasured possessions was a painting by Cézanne, Still Life with Fruit Dish (1879-80, now Museum of Modern Art, New York ), which he emulates in this picture. Within a similarly compressed space, Gauguin substituted mangoes for Cézanne's apples and a Tahitian-style printed cloth for a French floral wallpaper design. One significant departure is the human figure at the upper right, glimpsed thro

A leading exponent of still life painting, Vallayer-Coster joined the French Academy in 1770. She was patronized before the revolution by Marie Antoinette and later by the Empress Josephine. This picture can perhaps be identified with one of 'three small oval paintings of flowers and fruits' exhibited in the Salon of 1781. Diderot commented upon the truthfulness of her work. Notice the play of light on the porcelain and gilt of the vas

In November 1888, Van Gogh wrote: 'Gauguin was telling me the other day--that he'd seen a painting by Claude Monet of sunflowers in a large Japanese vase, very fine. But--he likes mine better. I'm not of that opinion.' Critics had earlier praised the 'brio and daring' of Monet's technique when he showed this still life, depicting sunflowers that grew along the pathway to his garden at Vétheuil, at the 1882 Impressionist exhibition.
