A contemporary bridge and an older wooden bridge across the River Thames have existed at Kingston, London, England since the 13th century and successive bridges contributed greatly to Kingston's success as a medieval market town. In 1825 Kingston Corporation announced it intended to build a bridge of Portland stone in the classical style to a design by Edward Lapidge, the county surveyor. It became free from tolls in 1870, and celebrations including a fireworks show were followed a few days later with the burning of the toll gates on Hampton Green.
