RMF1KXPR–A late 19th Century illustration of wild ducks taking off from a paddy field in Carolina, USA. Rice was introduced in the mid-19th century. Increasing automation in response came too late, and a series of hurricanes that hit Carolina in the late 1800s and damaged levees put an end to the industry.
