RM2B28ERA–A portrait of William Marwood a cobbler of Hornchurch (UK) who became a Middlesex and government Hangman in 1874. He developed the technique of hanging known as the 'long drop' which ensured that the prisoner's neck was broken and he died instantly., as opposed to the standard 'short drop' where the prisoner was strangled. A popular riddle of the time was 'If Pa killed Ma Who'd kill Pa?'. The answer was Marwood. Marwood. Some of his notable executions included Maolra Seoighe who was later found to have not been guilty and received a pardon. Seoighe spoke only Irish.

The century-old oak died in the 1960s but it served as a historical landmark until toppling over during a storm in 1995.
