Merchant Taylors' School was founded in 1561 by Sir Thomas White, Sir Richard Hilles, Emanuel Lucar and Stephen Hales, at Sandy Lodge in the Three Rivers district of Hertfordshire, England. Headmaster, John Goad guided the school through rebuilding after the plague in 1666 and the destruction of the Great Fire of London. His dismissal followed accusations by Titus Oates, a former pupil at the school who 'discovered' the 'Popish Plot', in 1678 which was supposed to include a threat to kill Charles II, but it was later found to be a hoax by him.
