The monument was constructed between 1926 and 1930 to commemorate the defence of the Suez Canal by the Western Allies during world war one from the threat of the Turkish Ottoman Army's attempts to seize control of the Suez Canal. Commissioned by the Universal Suez Ship Canal Company (Compagnie universelle du canal maritime de Suez) and designed by the French architect Michel Roux Spitz and Raymond Delamarre.
