The Raid on the Suez Canal took place between 26 January and 4 February 1915 when substantial Ottoman forces crossed the Sinai peninsula under German officers advanced from Southern Palestine to attack the British Empire-protected Suez Canal. Their attack failed - mainly because of strongly-held defences and alert defenders, but it marked the beginning of the Sinai and Palestine Campaign (1915-1918) of World War I.

Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery led the Eighth Army offensive and the Allied victory was the beginning of the end of the Western Desert Campaign, eliminating the Axis threat to Egypt, the Suez Canal and the Middle Eastern and Persian oil fields.
