RF2F98CRJ–Ismail Pasha (Isma'il Pasha), known as Ismail the Magnificent, was the Khedive of Egypt and conqueror of Sudan from 1863 to 1879, when he was removed at the behest of Great Britain. He served as viceroy of Egypt under Ottoman suzerainty from 1863 to 79. His administrative policies, notably the accumulation of an enormous foreign debt, were instrumental in leading to British occupation of Egypt in 1882.

The canal passes through the Isthmus of Suez offering vessels a direct route between the North Atlantic and northern Indian oceans via the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, avoiding the South Atlantic and southern Indian oceans and reducing the journey distance from the Arabian Sea to London by approximately 8,900 kilometres (5,500 miles). The canal opened with an audience of royalty and a procession of ships on the morning of 17 November.
