A PROCESSION OF SHIPS WITH CARGO FOR SCIENCE—Leading the procession to McMurdo Bases, Antarctic, at the outset of Operation Deep Freeze 1963, is the U. S. Coast Guard icebreaker Eastwind followed by the icebreaker Edisto and a large Navy cargo ship trailing behind. Seals sleeping close to the broken path lie unperturbed by the thundering, cracking up of the ice as the ships pass by the deliver winter supplies and equipment to the Base.

When word got around that the Coast Guard Icebreaker Eastwind was departing the Cape Christian area, 16 dog teams, sledges and Eskimos of all ages were on hand to bid the ship farewell. This impressive fellow, resplendent in his caribou skin clothes, is one of them. He is more than 80 years old, and is said to be one of the oldest Eskimos living. To him, the trip across the ice was just a lark. If you look closely, you can see the reflection of the Coast Guard photographer in his sun glasses.

Cape Hallett, Antarctic, February 27, 1960—This day finds the Coast Guard icebreaker Eastwind unloading supplies and equipment for wintering-over personnel at Cape Hallett scientific research station. It was her last job of the 1960 Navy Operation Deep Freeze after more than 60 days of acting as escort for Navy Task Force 43 cargo ships, ice crushing, delivering cargo and personnel to bases and other duties for U. S. Antarctic outposts before starting the return trip home to Boston, Mass.

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eastwind finds the ice of Baffin Bay a formidable foe and her helicopter takes off to scout the area so that a course can be chosen that will make passage less difficult. Long range ice reconnaissance for the Navy Task Group on this Arctic Mission was provided by two Royal Canadian Air Force planes. Short range scouting was done by helicopters from the Coast Guard and Navy icebreakers participating in the operations.

The Eskimos seem to enjoy the juicy ham steaks served to them aboard the Icebreaker Eastwind, although the knives and forks present a temporary problem. Looking directly at the camera is the local leader, who speaks only in his native tongue. Lack of language was no barrier once a system of sign language and arm-waving was established between the Eskimos and the Coast Guard crew. Wedding rings worn by the men in the photograph are of metal, and are supplied by various missionaries from time to time.

The Coast Guard icebreaker WESTWIND receives personnel and cargo from her disabled sister ship the Eastwind as they lay moored in Kane Basin north of Thule, Greenland. Enroute to Weather Station Alert with supplies, the Eastwind suffered damage to her starboard propeller blade and a hole in her fore peak while maneuvering to break through heavy Polar floes driving the ship toward shore.
