A sawtooth featherstar (Oligometra serripinna: diameter 12 cms.). When there is no current, the animal folds its arms and rests - as in this instance - often forming a pattern of remarkable beauty. When the current resumes, it spreads its arms widely in order to catch passing microplankton. The prey is then transferred to the central mouth. Featherstars attach themselves to the substrate by means of root-like appendages, which they use also in 'walking'. If they want to move more swiftly or travel longer distances, they swim by means of graceful undulations of their many arms. Bali, Indonesia. Bisporella citrina, commonly known as yellow fairy cups or lemon discos, is a species of fungus in the family Helotiaceae. The fungus produces tiny yellow cups up to 3 mm (0.12 in) in diameter, often without stalks, that fruit in groups or dense clusters on decaying deciduous wood that has lost its bark. The widely distributed species is found in North Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and Central and South America. Found in late summer and autumn, the fungus is fairly common, but is easily overlooked owing to its small size. This illustration dates to the 1870s and shows a blast furnace in Great Britain, where the enormous quantity of iron produced from clay ironstone was first obtained in the state of cast iron by the process of smelting. In thisprocess the clay ironstone is roasted after having been broken up into lumps. When ready, the ore is then put in a blast furnace (seen here), a structure about 40 to 50 feet high and 12 to 17 fet in internal diameter at its widest part.
