During the Second World War raid the Royal Navy destroyer 'Campbeltown' with reinforced bows and five tons of explosive on board crashed through the harbour defences, the crew were taken off and the ship exploded. Meanwhile the commandos demolished harbour gear after which maost withdrew.

RM2RTW8C0–An illustration by Edgar Thurston of the Altmark Incident between the British destroyer 'Cossack' and the German Tanker 'Altmark', a supply ship for the Graf Spee. It happened on 16–17 February 1940 and took place in what were neutral Norwegian waters. On board the Altmark were roughly 300 Allied prisoners whose ships had been sunk by the pocket battleship Graf Spee in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. When the Altmark ran aground British sailors boarded her and after some hand-to-hand fighting overwhelmed the ship's crew and took the released prisoners back to Blighy.
