The start of the school year in Galena City School District schools was delayed by a few weeks due to spring flooding along the Yukon River. In late May, huge sheets of ice clogged the Yukon downstream from Galena. The river's water rapidly rose and breached its banks, flooding the town, destroying homes, and leaving months of recovery work behind when the waters receded.
