Hertford Castle is a Norman castle situated by the River Lea in Hertford, the county town of Hertfordshire and constructed between 1170 and 1174. During the Hundred Years' War the castle was used to detain prisoners of royal and noble rank. These included King David II of Scotland and, in 1359, King John II of France. The following year the castle was granted to Edward's third son, John of Gaunt who spent much time there, using it as his chief country home when not abroad on campaigns. When John of Gaunt died in 1399, Richard II seized all the Lancastrian estates, including Hertford Castle. The gate between the upper and lower levels of Dumbarton Castle. It overlooks the Scottish town of Dumbarton and the River Clyde in Dumbartonshire, Scotland, and sits on a plug of volcanic basalt known as Dumbarton Rock. It has the longest recorded history of any stronghold in Scotland. From the fifth century until the ninth, the castle was the centre of the independent Brythonic Kingdom of Strathclyde. In medieval Scotland, Dumbarton was an important royal castle; it sheltered David II and his young wife, Joan of The Tower after the Scottish defeat at Halidon Hill in 1333. A late 19th century view of Dumbarton Castle, supposedly visited by Merlin, which has the longest recorded history of any stronghold in Scotland. It overlooks the Scottish town of Dumbarton, and sits on a plug of volcanic basalt known as Dumbarton Rock. Alexander II of Scotland built the medieval castle around 1220 in the ancient centre of the Kingdom of Strathclyde as a defence against the threat from Norway, whose kings ruled the Hebrides and the islands in the Clyde.
