A 19th century view of Dartmouth Castle, Devon, England. An artillery fort overlooking the mouth of the Dart estuary it was built in the 1380s to protect Dartmouth harbour from the threat of French attack. At the end of the 15th century, the castle was expanded with an artillery tower and an iron chain which could be stretched across the harbour forming the oldest known purpose-built coast artillery fort in Britain. After years of neglect in the early 19th century, defending the port of Dartmouth was no longer a military priority.
