RM2A50JE2–Cuirassier's Armor: Helmet, c. 1600-1620. The cuirassier was the heavy cavalryman of the late 1500s and early 1600s. Carrying pistols and a sword, he was clad in full armor, like this suit, with the exception of his lower legs, which were protected by heavy riding boots. Shortly after 1650, such heavy cavalry armor disappeared from use. By then, European cavalries had abandoned full armor as impractical against the increased sophistication of firearms. Similar armors survive in the Armory of Graz, Austria.

Steel and leather This harness represents one of the last vestiges of fully armored cavalry, known as cuirassiers, trained to charge the enemy with a lance. By the 17th century firearms dominated the battlefield. In response to this development, the armorer of this piece made the breastplate and helmet thicker to resist the impact of musket fire. The dent on the breastplate, visible under the right arm, is a proof mark made when the armorer fired a musket at the piece to guarantee to his client that the armor was indeed shot-proof. Remark

Highly unusual, however, are the engraved and gilded letters and monograms that decorate its russet surface.
