Items for trade on display in a shop window in Luneburg, Germany after the Second World War. After the war there was a scarcity of vital necessities such as food, clothing and every day commodities such as appliances and household utensils. As none of these were being manufactured the only option left to Germans to acquire these things was through a trade barter. In all the big German towns and cities, the Barter Emporium sprung up. An item would be displayed with a ticket stating the cost (pre war value) and what the owner would accept in exchange. 2nd October 1945. Siege of Sarajevo (1992-96) Exact figures of casualties are still disputed but it is estimated that approx. 19,000 people died, 10% of them children. 18,000 Serbian troops stationed in the hills surrounding city, besieged the 340,000 citizens with its constant artillery, mortar, sniper rifles and heavy machine-gun fire. Aside from the human cost of war, the cities infrastructure also suffered greatly - buildings, roads, waterworks, power supplies. Illustration of the deal Stanley Baldwin, as Chancellor of the Exchequer, agreed with the United States to pay war debt after the First World War. Proving that our word is our bond: Britain has agreed to pay to America a sum of £978,000,000, to be paid at the rate of £34,000,000 per annum for the first ten years, and £40,000,000 per annum for the following 52 years, including interest. During World War I, the Allies used thousands of Model T cars and trucks because of their low cost and ease of repair. The ambulance version's light weight made it well-suited for use on the muddy and shell-torn roads in forward combat areas. If stuck in a hole, a group of soldiers could lift one without much difficulty. By Nov. 1, 1918, 4,362 Model T ambulances had been shipped overseas. RMFFGWED–During World War I, the Allies used thousands of Model T cars and trucks because of their low cost and ease of repair. The ambulance version's light weight made it well-suited for use on the muddy and shell-torn roads in forward combat areas. If stuck in a hole, a group of soldiers could lift one without much difficulty. By Nov. 1, 1918, 4,362 Model T ambulances had been shipped overseas.
