Coriolanus was a 5th century BCE Roman general, who had military success against various uprisings challenging the government of Rome. Following his success, Coriolanus became active in politics, but his temperament was unsuitable. He left Rome to reside with the Volscian leader Attius Tullus Aufidius and they led the Volscian army to lay siege to Rome. Then Coriolanus' mother Veturia and his wife Volumnia and his two sons went to the Volscian camp and implored Coriolanus to cease his attack on Rome. Coriolanus was overcome by their pleas ended the siege.
