He was a volunteer in the 22nd Michigan Infantry and was only 12 years old. He served as marker of a regiment in a review at Nashville. At Battle of Chickamauga he won the rank of a sergeant by a deed of great valor—he managed to confront the Confederate general who stopped him and whip around his gun and shoot the Colonel.
