'Testing of the Pit' was a method of torture applied to Christians. Victims were hung upside down with their heads in excrement. Under Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the succeeding Tokugawa shogunate (1600- 1868), Catholic Christianity was repressed and adherents were persecuted. During these times, many Christians were killed in Japan, some by crucifixion; most famously, the twenty-six martyrs of Japan were tortured and crucified on crosses outside Nagasaki to discourage Christianity in 1597. BOXER REBELLION aka Boxer Uprising, the Boxer Insurrection & the Yihetuan Movement --- This rare & disturbing scene shows the before & after scene of the massacre of a British family in China. The rebellion against Colonialists and Christians led to an uprising between 1899 -1901 by the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists (Yìhéquán), known as the 'Boxers' by the English because of their use of Chinese martial arts, or Chinese boxing. Thai funerals usually follow Buddhist funerary rites, with variations in practice depending on the culture of the region. People of certain religious and ethnic groups also have their own specific practices. Thai Buddhist funerals generally consist of a bathing ceremony shortly after death, daily chanting by Buddhist monks, and a cremation ceremony. Cremation is practised by most peoples throughout the country, with the major exceptions being ethnic Chinese, Muslims and Christians.
