Following the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in July 1937, the Battle of Shanghai broke out between the Nationalist army of China and Imperial Japan. It became the catalyst and one of the bloodiest battles of the Second Sino-Japanese War, which continued until Japan's defeat in 1945 to end World War II. After conquering Shanghai in 1937, the Japanese installed a puppet government known as the Dadao Municipal Government of Shanghai, proclaimed in Pudong on 5 December 1937 to administer Japanese-occupied Shanghai.

Mr Eardley Thomas Maitland, 49-year-old British barrister and former Public Prosecutor in Shanghai, was the centre of a serious incident during the 'victory march'of Japanese troops through Shanghai. Shanghai (Chinese: 上 海; Pinyin Shànghǎi) is one of the largest cities by population in the People's Republic of China, and the world. The city is located in eastern China, at the middle portion of the Chinese coast, and sits at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Due to its rapid growth over the last two decades it has again become a global city, exerting influence over finance, commerce, fashion, technology and culture. Once a mere fishing and textiles town, Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th century.

RM2R71FYC–Shanghai China 2000. The Chinese flag flies on National Day from hundreds of buildings all over Shanghai. It was a Shanghai resident, Zeng Liangsong, who produced the winning design for Chinas national flag in a competition in 1949. The large star represents the Communist Party and the four smaller stars are the four classes as originally defined by Mao Zedung: workers, peasants, petty bourgeoisie and patriotic capitalists.
