A late 19th Century illustration of the death of Pierre Terrail (1476-1524), aka Chevalier de Bayard, a French knight during the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. He served Francis I, monarch of the House of Valois who ruled as King of France from 1515 until his death in 1547. During the war between Francis I and Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, Bayard was sent to Italy. When his C.O. was wounded in a combat, Bayard assumed command.
