RMKTT7TB–The Castle, Newcastle was a medieval fortification in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, built on the site of the fortress which gave the City of Newcastle its name. It was built by Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror, having returned south from a campaign against Malcolm III of Scotland. The stone Castle Keep was built between 1172 and 1177 by Henry II on the site of Curthose's castle. The Black Gate was added between 1247 and 1250 by Henry III.

The chapel's nave runs north-south with the chancel at right angles to it (so the chancel is aligned in the normal Christian building east-west direction) enabling the Chapel altar to be placed against the east wall. The Chapel is a fine example of early Norman architecture with a rib-vaulted room of three bays, two oblong ones for the nave and a third nearly square for the chancel. It was destroyed by fire and, in 1874, a replacement mansion, built in a Scottish baronial-style by John Lanyon of Lanyon, Lynn and Lanyon architects, overlooking a nearby lake.

RM2K513CA–Hedingham Castle, in the village of Castle Hedingham, Essex, is arguably the best preserved Norman keep in England. The castle may occupy the site of an earlier castle believed to have been built in the late 11th or early 12th century by Aubrey de Vere I, a Norman baron. Matilda, wife of King Stephen, died at Castle Hedingham on 3 May 1152. The castle was besieged twice, in 1216 and 1217, during the dispute between King John, rebel barons, and the French prince.

RM2DGBP1J–A late 19th Century view of Ludlow Castle, a ruined medieval castle in Ludlow, Shropshire and one of the first stone castles to be built in England. It was probably founded in the 11th Century by Walter de Lacy after the Norman conquest. During the English Civil War, it was besieged, taken by a Parliamentarian army in 1646 where a garrison was retained for much of the interregnum. After the Restoration of 1660, it fell into neglect until a mansion was constructed in the outer bailey. Apart from some landscaping the remainder of the castle has been left largely untouched.
