An old image of the castle ruins at Barnard Castle, County Durham, UK in 1812 printed on cloth. The earliest stone castle was built on the site of an earlier defended position from between 1095 t and 1125 by Guy de Balliol (later extended). A later resident Sir Henry Vane. decided to make Raby his principal residence and Barnard Castle was abandoned around 1626. In reference to the building, the phrase 'Barney Castle' in County Durham refers to anything that is a pathetic excuse. An old 1903 photograph of a convicts work party heading out from Dartmoor prison, England. The jail was designed by Daniel Asher Alexander and built originally between 1806 and 1809 by local labour to hold prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars, it was also used to hold American prisoners from the War of 1812.Dartmoor was re-opened in 1851 as a civilian prison, but closed again in 1917, when it was converted into a Home Office Work Centre for certain conscientious objectors. An old engraving of ‘Troughton’s transit circle’ of 1812. It is from a Victorian book of the 1880s. In astronomy, an astronomical transit is when a celestial body passes directly between a larger body and the observer. The smaller body appears to move across the face of the larger body. Many parameters of planets and stars can be established this way. The 6-foot mural circle, built by Edward Troughton, was installed at the Greenwich Observatory, London, England, UK in 1812. A mural circle is a telescope mounted on a circular frame aligned north-south. It measures the angular height of a star.
