A huge beehive rises on a bombed site next to Madame Tussaud's waxworks exhibition in Marylebone Road, London. In the autumn it will open as the first-ever planetarium in Britain and the Commonwealth. Once opened, visitors will be able to see movements of the stars and planets projected on the ceiling of the dome by optical equipment, which is now being made at the Zeiss works at Oberkochen, West Germany. The planetarium is being built for Tussaud's and its opening will mark the exhibition's bicentenary. The dome is 73 feet in diameter. Inside, there will be seating room for some 500 people. China: British Consulate and grounds, Shanghai, 1936. The elegant two-floor building at number 33 on the Bund, Shanghai's historic waterfront, was at the heart of British trade and interests in China. Behind it lay the Bund Garden, an acre of green space landscaped by an imported Scottish gardener. The consulate, and the consul's residence next door, were built in 1873 and are some of the oldest buildings still standing on the Bund. After the British gave up the concession, the complex was used by Chinese bureaucrats but it fell into disrepair after being abandoned. 1960s, All Souls church at Langham Place, Marylebone. On the left of the picture, Broadcasting House, headquarters of the BBC in London. With its distinctive spired circular vestibule, the church was built in the Regency style in 1824 from a design by John Nash. Behind the church, modern office blocks of the era, certainly not in any recognised architectural style, but a standard rectangular shape and built of pre-cast concrete panels with extensive windows. So callled 'modernism' in style, this dull building design was repeated all over London in the 1960s, being cheap and quick to build.
