RMPAXW0J–Samuel F. B. Morse. Artist: Byron M. Pickett (ca. 1834-1907). Dimensions: 15 1/2 x 12 3/4 x 9 3/8 in. (39.4 x 32.4 x 23.8 cm). Date: ca. 1870. Pickett's bust-length portrait of Morse is related to his over-lifesize bronze statue of the artist-inventor, dedicated in 1871 in Central Park. The elderly bearded Morse is portrayed in contemporary dress with cloaked shoulders. His drape and unincised pupils are typical neoclassical portrait devices that persisted well into the nineteenth century. RMPAXP4H–Nero and the Dying Seneca. Artist: After a design by Master of the Roman Emperors (active mid-15th century). Culture: possibly Italian, Rome. Dimensions: Diameter: 4 1/8 in. (105 mm). Date: ca. 1445. This is a uniface cast of the reverse of a medal of Nero, the obverse of which shows his bust to the right. It is the work of an unidentified medallist, active in the 15th century, who specialized in pastiches of ancient Roman coins enlarged in scale. He habitually included the initials S[enatus] C[onsulto] ('by order of the Senate') which he had observed on such coins. Museum: Metropolitan Museu
RMPA4KA2–Auguste Pottier. Artist: Louis Amateis (1855-1913). Dimensions: 26 x 19 x 11 in. (66 x 48.3 x 27.9 cm). Date: 1884. This portrait bust of Auguste Pottier (1823-1896) was no doubt one of Amateis's first efforts after he arrived in New York from his native Italy in 1883. Although it is uncertain how artist and sitter met, both were involved with work for city architectural firms, Amateis doing architectural sculpture and Pottier interior furnishings. RMPAM0YH–Maud Morgan. Artist: Olin Levi Warner (American, West Suffield, Connecticut 1844-1896 New York). Dimensions: 22 3/4 x 7 1/4 x 10 in. (57.8 x 18.4 x 25.4 cm). Date: 1880, cast 1897-98. Warner may have been inspired to model a portrait of harpist Maud Morgan (1860-1941) after seeing her perform in New York. There is no evidence of a commission, so presumably the sculptor undertook the subject on his own initiative. His treatment of the bust integrated antique forms with the naturalistic features of Morgan's face. Morgan's filleted hair, blank eyes, and fragmented shoulder termination align the
RMPAT8PY–George Washington. Artist: Victor David Brenner (American (born Lithuania), Kaunas 1871-1924 New York). Dimensions: 5 x 3 1/2 in. (12.7 x 8.9 cm). Date: 1890-1906. Educated in gem and seal engraving by his father in Lithuania, Brenner immigrated to the United States in 1890. After further training at the Cooper Union in New York and the Académie Julian in Paris, Brenner attained recognition as a sculptor. He is best-known for his presidential portraits, including the Lincoln Penny (1907) and this bas-relief bust of George Washington, which is likely after Joseph Wright's 1790 engraving of the
RMPA82EG–Major General Philip Kearny. Artist: Henry Kirke Brown (American, Leyden, Massachusetts 1814-1886 Newburgh, New York). Dimensions: 30 1/2 x 22 3/4 x 13 1/2 in. (77.5 x 57.8 x 34.3 cm). Date: 1872, cast 1900. While Brown was modeling a statue of Major General Philip Kearny for the United States Capitol in the early 1870s, the Kearny family probably commissioned him to execute this portrait bust (now in the Town Hall, Kearny, New Jersey).
