Sharkey, born in Dundalk, Ireland, ran away from home at a young age and went to sea as a cabin boy, eventually arriving in New York City in 1892 and joining the US Navy. He began his boxing career after being deployed to Hawaii and went on to have more than 50 bouts - fighting some of the great champions of the era including Jim Corbett, Bob Fitzsimmons and Jim Jeffries. Despite never winning the world heavyweight crown Sharkey is generally regarded as one of the great fighters of his time.
